Sumie is a character concept coming from the fictional game concept of "Stretched Canvas", which is a survival horror game that takes place inside of a surrealist painting. While developing her design, I was forced to confront my own lack of experience with both realism and 3D modeling, and was forced to cut back on many of my initial ideas, such as her hair dripping ink, to show that was what she was made of. I believe with a team of other talented artists and more time and resources I would be able to pull all of these details off, so as she exists right now Sumie is just a proof of concept.
Featured within this project are the various rough sketch stages I went through while designing Sumie, as well as a digitally painted reference sheet, and video renders of her 3D model. Even within this single character, I was able to produce a variety of ideas and artistic approaches to the same game concept.
